The island to be purchased MUST be in international waters. If there are no islands for sale in international waters we may have to create our own. This would be more expensive, but also more adaptable. We would not need to throw down giant steel or concrete columns to the ocean floor, all that would be required would be pockets of air and sealed steal tubes holding up the primary decking. To ensure that we do not have a constant swaying of the floating island will may have to install vibratory dampeners, such as those found in extremely tall skyscrapers. To maintain a constant position, a few tensioned tether cables attached to the ocean floor would suffice. the sand for beaches and the soil for crops, as well as minor insects would need to be imported from the mainland.

Now I would prefer an actual island, of course, but bribing countries to let us be our own country will be very, very expensive. And if we just declare independence with a few dingies as a defense force you can kiss imports and tourism goodbye.

Conclusion: Need an island that is in international waters, or create an artificial one.

But nobody will give me an estimate of the cost of something like this.

Well, a floating island would be awfully unstable . . .

The suggestion before of not declaring independence until we are well established would be quite good if we end up with a non-international-waters island (those are rather hard to come by). And I personally believe we should purchase independence, rather than just declare it - saves a lot of bloodshed.

But if we do construct our own island, I think building up an undersea mountain would be better than floating; and cheaper than sending pillars down to the ocean floor. There are some coral reefs and dead volcanoes and things that are very close to the surface, we'd just have to find a good one.

But I think it would still be cheaper to purchase independence than it would be to build an island.

Like I said no one has even estimated what this would cost.

While I'd like to build a floating island. The cost and logistics of it are enormous.

We'd have better luck retrofitting an existing ship or submarine to meet our specifications. A typhoon class sub would be an excellent specimen to retrofit. But, the cost of which is... again more than buying an island.

I'd say for expansion from our island it would be viable. However as an initial platform it would not be feasible.

Areas that would help reduce costs of such a project are:

Sub-sea mining (no-one is doing it right now due to EPA regulations)
* Would allow collection of metals from manganese nodules (nickel, iron, lead)
* Offsets import costs of metals for construction.
* Diamonds are also prevelent in sub-sea mining off the coast of Africa. Though their production was bought and shut down by debeers.

Hydrate harvesting (Methane Hydrates, largest natural gas reserve on earth)
* Harvesting methane hydrates would allow us to tap into one of the largest natural gas supplies on earth. A sub-sea production facility to turn in from gas phase into methanol would be optimal. No one is doing this yet, so it's a possibility to get a jump start on this.
